I July of 1999, an institution dedicated exclusively to the traditional weaving from different regions in Bolivia is established: the Museo de Textiles Andinos Bolivianos (MUTAB), in Miraflores, La Paz. It is so far the only institution in Bolivia dedicated to the textile art of all the Andean communities.
The MUTAB, later on, decides to extend its proposal by offering guides and bilingual catalogs. In the same manner, through programs with weavers from different communities, a shop is created; where weavers' products are displayed .
This is an effort to provide visitors with authentic textiles while helping out with the preservation of traditional weaving techniques and supporting weavers in Bolivian Andean communities
The exhibit allows visitors to learn about the weaving process: spin, twisted, dying that preserves natural tints, and the arrangement of traditional looms which have been sustained for thousands of years.
The traditional cloths and textiles of the communities from the Andes conserve the shapes and designs that capture the pre-inka, colonial and present cultural expressions
The styles of the textiles of the Andes show a wide variety of shapes, colors, group of portraits and techniques that allow men and women express their worldview, how they relate to the environment, and their rituals.
In the exhibit, the llixllas and the Aqsus of the women; the unkus, qapachos and the yaqollas can be read. It is possible to understand the ancient messages that were written and that are today, still written in looms, therefore in textiles.
